NBCUniversal has announced that “Super Mario World” will be the official title of the upcoming sequel to 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” which opens in cinemas April 3rd 2026 in the United States.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors for the follow-up which will also launch in international markets either on that date or later in April.
The name matches up with the legendary 1990 platform title from the SNES era, the best-selling game of its generation and the personal favorite of series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
The game introduced the rideable dinosaur Yoshi to the franchise, and a credits stinger in the first film also teased the arrival of Yoshi – meaning he’s likely to show up in the new film.
The first film broke numerous box-office records, racking up $1.36 billion in ticket sales and at least $75 million in PVOD revenue, becoming the second highest grossing film worldwide of 2023. Critics were mixed on the film, but audiences seemed happy.
Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment (“Despicable Me”) are once again producing the new film with Universal Pictures distributing.
