Google Lawyer Calls DOJ Proposals a Wishlist for Competitors
Boulder, Colorado, Usa September 26, 2022: Google Company Sign Outside Their Campus On Boulder, Co

Summary: Google vs DOJ remedies trial has begun. Google’s lawyer basically called DOJ proposals a wishlist for competition. The DOJ argued that AI could help Google extend its search monopoly. Opening statements have been made. A three-week trial is before us.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the remedies trial in the Google Search monopoly case. Google lost that trial to the DOJ last year, and now a three-week remedies trial is ongoing.

The DOJ believes Google could use AI in order to extend its search monopoly

It was revealed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) believes Google could use AI in order to extend its search monopoly. That’s why DOJ thinks that Google needs strong measures imposed, in order to be prevented from doing that.

As a reminder, DOJ wants the Court to force Google to sell Chrome, and also share various data, as part of its demands. Google replied several times to these demands, and the last round of replies came a couple of days ago. Google believes that DOJ’s proposals would undermine American economic and tech leadership, amongst other things.

A number of AI companies are expected to testify

A number of AI companies will testify during this three-week trial. DOJ’s attorney, David Dahlquist, said the following in its opening statement: “time to tell Google and all other monopolists who are out there listening, and they are listening, that there are consequences when you break the antitrust laws.”

He also added that: “This court’s remedy should be forward-looking and not ignore what is on the horizon.” He noted that Google’s search monopoly helps improve the company’s AI products, which is also a way to push users to its search engine.

Google has a major deal with Samsung in relation to Gemini, it was revealed

Google’s major deal with Samsung was noted as well, as part of this point. As a reminder, Google is paying a considerable sum to Samsung in order to keep Gemini pre-installed on the company’s products. We already wrote about that earlier today.

Google’s lawyer, John Schmidtlein, in its opening statement, said that the DOJ’s proposals amount to “a wishlist for competitors looking to get the benefits of Google’s extraordinary innovations.”

He added that AI competitors “would like handouts as well, even though they are competing just fine.” Google believes that AI products are outside the scope of this entire case, which is focused on search engines.

Google’s appeal is coming

Google already announced an appeal once the trial has concluded, regardless of the remedies.
