What is Lent?

Lent is a liturgical period dedicated to conversion, focusing on three spiritual pillars: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This time is marked by sacrifices, repentance, and reflection, with the goal of preparing to commemorate the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday.

How long does Lent last?

The Bible mentions 40 days (although it’s not exactly 40) which symbolize the 40 days of the flood, the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, the 40 years the Jewish people wandered in the desert, the 40 years Moses and Elijah spent on the mountain, and the 400 years the Jewish people spent in Egypt.

When does Lent begin and end in 2025?

In 2025, the liturgical period begins on March 5 with Ash Wednesday and ends on April 17 with Holy Thursday.

Why is meat not eaten during Lent?

The practice of fasting and abstaining from eating meat during these days has its roots in the 2nd century as a form of penance. For Christians, this tradition symbolizes purification, inspired by the sacrifices of figures like Jesus, who fasted for 40 days in the desert before beginning his mission.
