Erie Otters star Malcolm Spence commits to University of Michigan
Erie Otters forward Malcolm Spence, a projected first-round pick in next month’s NHL Draft, announced Monday he plans to play for the University of Michigan next season.

Another big name is leaving the major-junior ranks early to join the NCAA.
Erie Otters forward Malcolm Spence, a projected first-round pick in next month’s NHL Draft, announced Monday he plans to play for the University of Michigan next season.
Spence, 18, is the latest player to take advantage of a rule change by the NCAA, allowing players from the OHL, WHL and QMJHL to play in the U.S. college ranks starting next season.
The move has created dramatic changes across top development levels.
“We express our gratitude to Malcolm for his contributions both on and off the ice,” Otters GM Dave Brown said in a statement. “He has made Erie and the Otters a better place. We eagerly await the NHL Draft, sharing the excitement that is forthcoming for Malcolm and his family. We wish Malcolm every success as he embarks on his hockey path.”
The native of Mississauga, Ont., joins Sudbury Wolves star defenceman Henry Mews, who committed to Michigan earlier this season. Mews was drafted in the third round by the Calgary Flames last year.
Picked second overall by the Otters in the 2022 OHL draft, Spence had 32 goals and 41 assists for 73 points in 65 games this season.
Other recent NCAA commits with OHL eligibility remaining include Barrie Colts forward Anthony Romani (Michigan State, Vancouver Canucks draft pick) and goalie Sam Hillebrandt (Ohio State). Both were key players for a Colts team that advanced to the OHL’s Eastern Conference final this season.
