Eric Dier set to leave Bayern Munich for Champions League club despite Harry Kane plea
Eric Dier is expected join Monaco this summer after deciding to leave Bayern Munich. According to reports, the English defender has agreed a deal to join the French club, with his contract in Bavaria coming to an end. Kane and Dier have been at Bayern together for over a yearGetty Dier will reportedly pen a deal that runs until the summer of 2027 with the option of a third year. The news will come as a bitter blow to Harry Kane, who expressed his desire for Dier to stay with Bayern into next season. Speaking last month, Kane revealed his desire for Dier to stay, saying: “Eric’s been great, he’s been waiting patiently. “Obviously Dayot [Upamecano] and [Kim] Min-jae have been fantastic this season, so Eric’s just had to bide his time. “He’s come in the last couple of games and done really, really well, and got two clean sheets so yeah, of course I’d love Eric to stay. “I guess that’s between him and the club. “I haven’t had any conversations with him, so we’ll have to see. He did really well when he played. “Eric and I get on very well. But we haven’t talked about his future. That’s a matter between him and the club.” Bayern director Christoph Freund recently revealed the club were in talks with Dier over a contract extension. However, the former Tottenham man looks set to snub those talks in favour of a European rival. Dier joined Bayern in January 2024 and has spent the last 18 months with the clubGetty Since joining Bayern, Dier has made 45 appearances for the club, scoring two goals. While out of favour in the first half of the season, the 31-year-old has been a first team regular under Vincent Kompany since the start of February. Monaco made the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League and are currently poised to qualify for next season’s edition of the competition – sitting fourth in Ligue 1. Dier isn’t the only English player who has been linked with the club either. Jordan Henderson was on the cusp of joining Monaco from current club Ajax during the January transfer window before performing something of a u-turn on his decision. This led to a rather memorable frosty exchange with a journalist in a press conference in the days that followed. Dier’s move also means that Kane will be without his close friend next term with the England skipper planning to stay in Munich for at least one more season. Kane is believed to have a release clause in his Bayern contract that drops to £54million, from £67m, for an English team in January. That clause had put a number of clubs, including Manchester United, on alert that Kane could be open to a move back once he has picked up the first league title of his career in the coming weeks. However, sources close to Kane have indicated he is happy in Bavaria and would like to have a crack at defending the Bundesliga and winning the Champions League before even contemplating his exit.
