EFL star could get two promotion medals due to unusual rule
Wrexham star Jay Rodriguez could receive two promotion medals this season thanks to an EFL rule. The 35-year-old helped the Red Dragons book their place in next season’s Championship on Saturday – the club’s third consecutive promotion. As part of Saturday’s celebrations, Wrexham were presented with a trophy, with medals given to each player. And that included Rodriguez who only signed for the club in January on an 18-month deal from hometown club Burnley. The former England international called time on his second stint with the Clarets in the midst of their promotion-clinching campaign with Premier League football once again returning to Turf Moor. Rodriguez featured in 20 Championship games, scoring twice, before his switch to Wrexham where he has clocked up 17 appearances for the Welsh club. With both teams having already secured promotion ahead of this weekend’s season finale, Rodriguez is set to bag himself two medals according to a rule in the EFL handbook. It states that a qualifying player must feature on a club’s team sheet for 25 per cent of their league games. According to The Wrexham Insider, rule 38.2 in the handbook states: “To be eligible to receive a Championship, League One or Two winners medal, a player must have been named on the team sheet in at least 25% of the Club’s league fixtures in that season. Any medals agreed over and above those detailed above will be at cost to the Club concerned.” While clubs are eligible for 25 medals to hand out to squad members, they can also request additional medals from the league. It remains to be seen which medals Rodriguez will receive as the season draws to a close. Should they better Leeds’ result at Plymouth, then Rodriguez would be entitled to a winners medal on top of his League One runners up medal. So fine are the margins that if Leeds and Burnley record wins on the final day, then it will be Daniel Farke’s men that will take the title on goal difference with both teams registering 100 points.Rodriguez and his Wrexham teammates partied into the early hours of Saturday night after sealing promotion. Guided by the finances and glamour of Reynolds and McElhenney, Wrexham have reached the Championship one year earlier than planned. Reacting to their historic feat of becoming the first club to register three consecutive promotions, Reynolds reflected on the journey he has endured since taking charge of the club four years ago. “We’ve been with Wrexham for what seems like the blink of an eye, but so much has happened,” he posted on Instagram.
