A controversial PS5 UI update that Sony called a “bug” last year is apparently back, but in a limited capacity. Sometime over the last day or two, game tiles for certain PS5 games once again started replacing background art with “official news” and game-related ads that players can’t turn off.
PS5 update replaces background images under game tiles with ‘official news’ and ads
I first noticed the change when playing RoboCop: Rogue City. The background image under the game tile is now replaced with an advertisement for the game’s upcoming stand-alone expansion.
I took the screenshots below today. The first screenshot shows the original RoboCop: Rogue City background image, which now only appears if I take my console offline. The second screenshot shows what replaces the original art when the console is online.
Now, this isn’t quite egregious as the previous “bug” that caused almost all game tiles to be clogged with irrelevant ads and random “official news.” Personally, this doesn’t bother me just yet, but I do hope that this doesn’t escalate into full-blown ads once again.
I checked online to see if anyone else was experiencing this, and noticed a recent Reddit thread where a user complained that a few of their games were no longer displaying the original background images.
I’m not sure if this is last year’s “bug” returning or a permanent new feature. Either way, it’s certainly not my favorite PS5 update.
