“The global scale of small cars is huge, but Chery lacks small cars today.” That was the statement put forth by Zhang Guibing, president of Chery International, during his presentation at the recent Chery International Business Summit this year.
To remedy this, Zhang announced that the Chinese automaker will introduce a range of small cars across all its export brands, namely Chery, Omoda, Jaecoo and Lepas. We’ll start with one that was introduced to us very recently, the Omoda 3 (or C3).
The Omoda 3 is a compact crossover with aggressive styling that slots in below the Omoda 5. Based on the presentation slide, the model measures 4,200 mm long, which is 200 mm less than the Omoda 5.
However, it won’t be smallest offering in the Omoda line-up, as there will also be a C2 and C1, which will presumably also be known as the Omoda 2 and Omoda 1 in selected markets. Zhang did not provide detailed information on these upcoming models or any of the others seen on the slide, but he noted that they will be fun to drive with dynamic handling. He added that they will also be competitively priced and be built on a dedicated platform.
On the Chery column, there is the T3 and T2, which likely points towards new generations of the Tiggo 3 (discontinued in many markets) and Tiggo 2 (also known as the Tiggo 3x). Both will be joined by the T1 that is the smallest of the bunch.
As for Jaecoo, there will be a J3 to accompany the J5, J7 and J8. This model isn’t expected to make its debut anytime soon because the company hasn’t settled on a design direction and is currently gathering feedback from its customers and media.
The latest brand to be part of Chery International is Lepas, which has already presented the Lepas 8. The SUV has already been confirmed for Indonesia (it’ll be called the L8 there), where it will be joined by two other models: the L6 and L4. Moving forward, there will also be the L3, L2 and L1.
To make the product line-up easy to comprehend, all models with ‘3’ in their name will measure around 4,200 mm long, while those with ‘2’ are in the region of 4,000 mm. Models with ‘1’ in their name are the smallest at around 3,800 mm.
