‘Changed his number’ – Gervonta Davis bashed by Lamont Roach for not paying $250,000 bet

Lamont Roach claims Gervonta Davis has changed his phone number in order to avoid honouring their eye-watering wager. Not only did Roach take Davis the distance, but he also proved to be his toughest opponent to date by holding ‘Tank’ to a majority draw. Roach would have even had his hand raised were it not for referee Steve Willis wrongfully denying him a knockdown in the ninth round when Davis took a voluntary knee. Despite this, Davis still hasn’t paid his debt to Roach. “Like the betting that he was going to knock me out and stuff like that. That didn’t go too well for him,” Roach told Andre Ward during a recent appearance on his podcast. “We bet and we shook on it… he changed his number, I haven’t got that [money] yet. “I tried to call him, and I tried to DM him too. He changed his number.” Roach’s team lodged an exemption to the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) to have the fight overturned in the immediate aftermath, but the result was upheld. They are now expected to settle their score in a rematch this summer. Organisers are reportedly targeting June 21 in Las Vegas. The WBA have backed a second fight, although it remains to be seen whether they will grant Roach permission to keep hold of his super featherweight strap again while challenging for Davis’ title at the weight above.
