‘I was furious’ – Danny Murphy reveals what happened when Fulham star tried to confront him over criticism

Danny Murphy revealed an unnamed Fulham player wanted to confront him after criticising him in the media. The talkSPORT co-host revealed his story following comments from Paul Scholes, who detailed a Manchester United star demanding to meet and talk about the former player’s criticism. The unnamed Fulham player was not happy with Murphy’s criticismGetty However, the two ultimately did not approach each other in person as the player ‘never got back’ to Scholes.   Over the years some pundits have come under pressure for being too harsh on players. Some players reach out to pundits, others ignore the comments and sometimes they respond on the pitch. In a recent example, Lamine Yamal poked fun at Rafael van der Vaart by lowering his shorts after he scored against the Netherlands because the Dutchman said he wore them too low. Speaking on White and Jordan, former Liverpool and Charlton midfielder Murphy said: “In my early years I had a lad at Fulham. I’d criticised him, they lost at home to Man United and I saw him swapping shirts at the end, smiling and shaking somebody’s hand. “I went to town on him a little bit. And one of the other Fulham boys called me and said this particular player wanted to speak to me about it, so I said ‘fine give him my number’ and he didn’t call. “I was furious about it. I could have chosen my words better.”  He continued: “I had a conversation with a very senior England player who’s still playing now and he actually came up to me, I was having a beer, and he actually thanked me for some of the things I’d said because I went against  the grain a bit.  “I said some good things about him when everyone else was on him. I’ve had that from three really big players who are still playing.”  Murphy did not reveal who those players were, but Fulham supporters will be wondering who it was. Murphy said the player never phoned him Currently, Fulham sit eighth in the Premier League on 48 points as they hunt a European spot for the first time since 2011. This task was made easier by Arsenal’s 3-0 demolition of Real Madrid, securing a fifth Champions League spot for the top flight. If English teams win the Champions and Europa League the Premier League could have seven spots in Europe’s best competition. Marco Silva’s side have not recorded a back-to-back win since February but their recent surprise 3-2 win against first place Liverpool will be a big boost. In their next seven matches they will face four sides competing for a Champions League spot: Bournemouth; Chelsea; Aston Villa; and Manchester City.
