While many electric vehicles (EVs) in the market operate on an 800V electrical architecture, BYD has taken things a step further with its new Super e-Platform. Running at 1000V, the new platform can also take up to 1,000A of current, which allows for up to 1,000 kW (or 1MW) of charging power.

With a charger capable of that power output, the company claims the technology can replenish range at a rate of two km per second. It adds that 400 km of range can be added in just five minutes, which is considerable since that is the average amount of time needed to fuel up a car running on fossil fuel (petrol or diesel).

The new platform uses the company’s redesigned Blade batteries that allow for faster ion transfer in the electrolyte. This allows for ultra-fast charging with an industry-leading 10C charging multiplier, which theoretically means they can be charged at 10 times the battery’s capacity per hour. Lower internal resistance through the diaphragm also helps reduce cell heat generation by up to 50%, while a new flow path for the refrigerant over the top and bottom of the battery pack increases heat exchange performance by up to 90%.

BYD also said it had to redesign other systems to be compatible with the 1000V platform, including a new electric motor that can spin at up to 30,511 rpm to provide an output of 789 PS (778 hp or 580 kW). This makes it the fastest-spinning and highest-output electric motor in the world, and the power density is also the highest in the industry at 16.4 kW/kg.

To make sure the motor gets the power it needs, a new generation of silicon carbide (SiC) power chips have been developed with voltage ratings of up to 1,500V. The Super e-Platform is making its debut in two BYD EVs that are already open for pre-sales in China, which are the:

BYD Han L

The Han L is a sleek sedan that measures 5,050 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, 1,505 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,970 mm. Pre-sale pricing for the EV ranges from 270,000 to 350,000 yuan (about RM166k to RM215k).

According to CarNewsChina, the Han L will be equipped with an 83.2-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is good for between 601 and 701 km of range following the CLTC standard.

The entry-level variant gets a rear electric motor rated at 680 PS (671 hp or 500 kW), while the all-wheel drive variant adds gains a motor at the front axle with 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW). Together, the total system output of the AWD variant is a mighty 1,101 PS (1,086 hp or 810 kW), enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 2.7 seconds, a 100-200 km/h time of 4.74 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h.

BYD Tang L

The Tang L is a large seven-seat SUV that is being offered are pre-sale prices of between 280,000 and 360,000 yuan (RM172k and RM221k). Occupying a footprint similar to its sedan stablemate, the Tang L is 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, 1,760 mm tall and its wheelbase spans 2,950 mm.

The available motor setups are identical to the Han L, although the Tang L gets a larger 100.5-kWh LFP battery. Depending on the variant, the range figures are either 560 km, 600 km or 670 km. In its top configuration, the SUV completes the century sprint in 3.6 seconds, gets from 100-200 km/h in 6.19 seconds and has a theoretical top speed of 287 km/h (265 km/h is what is being announced on the official website).

One unique feature of the Tang L is its optional DJI drone docking station that is mounted on the roof. Reportedly costing around 16,000 yuan (RM9.8k), the drone can take off and land while the vehicle is moving at speeds of up to 25 km/h.

To make sure buyers get to benefit from the Super e-Platform ultra-fast charging capability, BYD said it will deploy over 4,000 ‘Megawatt Flash Chargers’ that are liquid cooled and capable of delivering up to 1,360 kW of charging power. These are equipped with two charging guns and occupy an area of 1.5 square metres, which sounds great but there is an issue.

Unlike regular EV chargers, the new high-powered units require more direct access to high-voltage mains, which limits their deployment to locations that have robust grid infrastructure. To remedy this, chargers in areas with grid supply limitations are supported by energy storage systems so they can provide the advertised output.

With up to 1,360 kW of output, the Megawatt Flash Charger beats those who other brands such as Tesla (500 kW), Li Auto (520 kW), Nio (640 kW) and Xpeng (800 kW). Looking at BYD’s official website, the Han L and Tang L appears to require both charging guns plugged in (one port on each side of the vehicle) to achieve the maximum charging rate.
