Blue Jays’ Scherzer receives cortisone shot in thumb, timeline to return unclear

Max Scherzer said he needed to restore his right thumb to 100 per cent health before returning.

He took the first step toward that by receiving a cortisone injection to reduce swelling and pain, manager John Schneider told reporters on Tuesday.

Scherzer will now take things day by day with no set timeline for his return to the mound, but he will travel with the team, Schneider added.

The 40-year-old exited his first Blue Jays start on Saturday after just three innings due to a lat strain that was caused by the thumb issue, which dated back to spring training.

He was placed on the 15-day injured list on Sunday.

“I’m frustrated. I want to pitch. I know I can pitch. I know I can throw the ball really well,” Scherzer said after his lone appearance, during which he allowed two home runs. “Unfortunately, I’ve got an issue going on. It’s coming from the thumb, and I’ve got to address this.

“I’ve got to zero out that thumb before I pitch again.”

It’s unclear who will replace Scherzer in the rotation. His next turn comes Friday, with the recently recalled Easton Lucas and swingman Yariel Roriguez both options to get a start.
