Blue Jays’ Gimenez day-to-day with quad injury, Stefanic to join team

The Toronto Blue Jays will be a little shorthanded on the infield Thursday night in Anaheim.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that second baseman Andres Gimenez got a precautionary MRI on his quad after leaving Wednesday’s game in the seventh inning with right quad tightness.

Gimenez is being listed as day-to-day for now and will not be in the starting lineup for the series finale against the Angels.

With the Blue Jays short on infielders, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reports that Michael Stefanic is on his way to join the team in Seattle.

Stefanic, 29, was pulled in the middle of Thursday’s game playing for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

In 40 games for the Bisons this season, Stefanic is slashing .232/.301/.255.

In other Jays news, Schneider said that Jose Urena will remain in the starting rotation and start Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.

Urena made his Blue Jays debut in Tuesday’s series opener against the Angels. He started the game and gave up four hits and two earned runs while striking out four over 4.1 innings.

The 33-year-old swingman agreed to a major league deal with the Blue Jays on Saturday.

You can watch the Blue Jays take on the Angels Thursday night live on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ starting at 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT.
