CAPA: Oil prices have a direct impact on airfares

During the CAPA (Centre for Aviation) conference held in Athens, Jonathan Wober, Chief Financial Analyst at CAPA, highlighted a critical issue for the global tourism and aviation industry: the direct correlation between fuel prices and airline ticket pricing. It is important to note that fuel currently accounts for 25% of airline revenues, while in 2007 it reached up to 35%, making it the most significant pricing driver.

As Mr. Wober stated, “Fares tend to move up or down in line with oil prices.” His remarks came at a time of heightened uncertainty in the global energy market, with oil price fluctuations creating new dynamics for airlines, tour operators, and travel service providers.

Mr. Wober emphasized that although several factors influence airfare pricing – such as supply and demand, seasonality, and geopolitical stability – the role of fuel prices remains both constant and immediate. Particularly during periods of rising oil prices, airlines often pass the added costs on to consumers, resulting in higher ticket prices, reduced bookings, and ultimately, pressure on tourism revenues.

Analyzing trends from recent years, CAPA’s Chief Financial Analyst pointed out that the risk of sudden oil price fluctuations increases the difficulty of strategic planning for airlines, especially in regions such as Europe, where economic and operational balances are more fragile.

The CAPA conference in Athens brought together senior executives from the global aviation and tourism sectors, focusing on the impact of energy costs, sustainability challenges, and the role of technology in optimizing operational expenses.

Mr. Wober’s intervention underscored the importance of continuous monitoring of energy markets by all tourism professionals—airlines, tour operators, and hoteliers—as oil price volatility remains a key factor in liquidity and competitiveness across the travel industry.
