Daulton Varsho is one step closer to his season debut.
The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder joined the triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday as the next step in his rehab assignment, the team said.
Varsho will start for the Bisons when they face the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old underwent shoulder surgery in September, which has limited his ability to throw the ball from the outfield.
He spent pre-season with the Blue Jays as a designated hitter before staying in Florida for extended spring training.
Varsho appeared in 136 games for the Blue Jays last season, batting .214 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs and winning his first career Gold Glove.
When he appears for the Bisons, he will join his dad Gary Varsho, who played in Buffalo in 1994, as the only known father-son duo to suit up for the franchise.
Toronto continues a three-game road series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday, with live coverage on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ beginning at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
