Blackmagic Shows Off Complete Immersive Video Experience for First Time at NAB 2025

As a follow-up to our first IRL check-in with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera back at SXSW last month, which showcased the URSA Cine Immersive in a lineup next to the rest of the current URSA Cine lineup, the Blackmagic Design team was finally able to fully showcase the immersive video experience as it's meant to be viewed here at NAB Show 2025.And, to put it mildly, it was existentially exhilarating. It’s really hard to put into words just how uncanny and, dare we say, “immersive” the experience of viewing URSA Cine Immersive-shot footage on an Apple Vision Pro headset is. And, if development and trends continue, the immersive video revolution could be the biggest leap in video technology since the Full HD to 4K jump—and it could also perhaps be the answer to growing concerns over AI’s intrusion into the film and video world. The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive ExperienceDemoing the Apple Vision Pro for the first time was a unique experience in its own right. However, with the Vision Pro already being well-covered and reviewed over the past year, it was pretty much what one would expect. The Vision Pro is a bit clunky, a bit heavy, and just a bit awkward to experience for the first time. However, if you subscribe to the theory that V1 models are always this way for new technology, the experience itself is unlike anything you’ve likely seen before. The footage, shot on a Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera out in the snowy wilderness of Canada, was also quite breathtaking and uncannily lifelike. With the camera positioned at a standing-person height, the 180° media supported by the Vision Pro’s dual 8160 x 7200 58.7MP sensors felt like you’d stepped into another place. Minus sound and smell, it was still an out-of-body experience that felt like something special was in our future. What’s Next for the Blackmagic Immersive ExperienceBlackmagic Design was also able to show off the “complete” immersive video workflow as it currently stands. There will obviously be more gear and tech to support immersive video over the coming months and years, but for now Blackmagic does offer everything one needs to rig up an URSA Cine Immersive camera and capture nearly anything a creator’s heart might desire in 8K images at up to 90fps, and with 16-stops of dynamic range supporting some immersive, cinematic video capabilities. We’ll have more to share about the URSA Cine Immersive as it continues to make its way to more filmmakers, cinematographers, and the greater film and video public here soon. For now, though, if you’re curious about the URSA Cine Immersive, get more curiouser because it’s truly something you have to experience to believe.
