Arsenal vs Newcastle United: Confirmed team news, predicted lineups and injuries

Arsenal take on Newcastle United at the Emirates this afternoon in what has become a battle for second place in the Premier League table.

Both teams have just two top-flight fixtures left with Newcastle, who sit third ahead of Gameweek 37, able to leapfrog the Gunners with a victory.

Arsenal have a number of players ruled out this afternoon including Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Magalhaes and Mikel Merino.

The first three stars are all injured while Merino is suspended after he was sent off in the 2-2 draw against champions Liverpool last time out.

There are also question marks over the fitness of six players – Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz and Jorginho.

Rice was not in Arsenal’s squad for the trip to Anfield on Sunday with Mikel Arteta suggesting the England star had suffered a hip problem, admitting it ‘does not look good’ and that the midfielder was ‘struggling’.

Timber was dropped to the bench against Liverpool but didn’t make it off the bench with Arteta saying: ‘With Jurrien we brought him [into the squad] to see if he was better but it was clear that he was not fit to play.’

Trossard was forced off against Liverpool – appearing to hold his left hamstring – but Arteta did not provide an update on him after the match.

Havertz has been on the sidelines since February with a hamstring issue but could be set for a return after he was spotted back in team training.

Rice and Trossard were back in training on Saturday and would appear to be available this afternoon.

Jorginho has missed Arsenal’s last four Premier League matches with what is thought to be a lung injury. He is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning he may well have played his final game for the Gunners.

Newcastle have Lewis Hall and Matt Targett ruled out for the trip to Arsenal.

Joe Willock, Kieran Trippier and Joelinton all look set to miss out too with their respective injury problems.

There are also question marks over the fitness of Sven Botman after he suffered a knee injury in the win over Chelsea in the Magpies’ last match.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, though, has suggested that Botman’s knee issue isn’t too serious and he may be able to play against Arsenal.

‘He was slightly uncomfortable in the half-time break [against Chelsea] with a knee problem,’ Howe said.

‘ I don’t think it’s serious. He was obviously okay to carry on, but he was feeling something so, tactically, I thought it would help us to change. With that in mind, we brought Lewis Miley on.’
