Over two years after plans were first revealed and nearly one year since a series order was handed out last May, it appears the anticipated live-action “Tomb Raider” TV series may be ‘dead’.
That’s the claim in a new The Daily Mail report whose first source suggests the project is “not going ahead” while their second source claims the whole thing has died.
Word came in January 2023 that celebrated British scribe and Emmy winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge was attached to write scripts and executive produce a “Tomb Raider” TV series for the streamer. The show would follow the character of archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.
The project was part of Waller-Bridge’s overall multi-million dollar deal at Amazon, a deal that has reportedly yet to deliver any shows or films from the creator. The deal was made under former Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke who was “personally overseeing” the series according to Puck’s Matthew Belloni a few weeks back.
He said the “Tomb Raider” series had “now gone through two writers rooms and tens of millions of dollars in development costs. There’s still no script.” Questions have been raised as to how much work was done on the series, or if it was a case of Waller-Bridge delivering the scripts and Amazon not gelling with her creative vision.
Amazon has yet to officially confirm the cancellation. Crystal Dynamics’ planned new game in the series is still reportedly going to happen at least.
