Alexander Skarsgård has suggested he might “pitch” for himself to play a “very polite” Swedish version of James Bond.

The actor, 48, is known for his roles in True Blood, Big Little Lies, Infinity Pool and Succession, and in a new interview, he has tentatively put his name forward as a possible outside bet to be the next 007 star.

Speaking to The Times, Skarsgård was asked about the possibility of taking on the iconic role, to which he responded: “I’m way too Swedish for that”.

However, when it was pointed out that the franchise has changed ownership and might be looking for a total relaunch, it seemed to trigger a few thoughts. “Yeah, I could be a very polite, diplomatic Swedish James Bond, who negotiates” he said.

In his vision, a Skarsgård Bond would mark a clean break from previous incarnations in more than just nationality. “Oh no, there’ll be no violence at all,” he added. “It’ll just be boardroom meetings where people try to find consensus, everyone’s stressed out and desperately tries to avoid an argument or complications, that’s very Swedish. I’ll pitch it.”

The search is on for the next Bond, after Daniel Craig made his final appearance in the role in 2021’s No Time To Die. In March, it was announced that the long-serving producers of the films, Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, had stepped away from the creative process and handed over control to Amazon MGM Studios, ending over 60 years of the Broccoli family’s control of the Bond estate.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman, producers of the Spider-man and Harry Potter films respectively, have been reported as the possible replacements for Wilson and Broccoli.

Bond fans have not reacted kindly to the news of the franchise’s sale, with some predicting that Amazon will “ruin” the series by over-saturating the market with “mediocre spin-offs”.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has often been considered the front-runner for the role, and last year, it was reported that he had been offered the job, although the actor avoided the question when asked about it on the red carpet for action-comedy The Fall Guy.

As for Skarsgård, earlier this week he starred in a new music video for These New Puritans’ ‘A Season In Hell’, from their upcoming album ‘Crooked Wing’.
