Gears Of War: Reloaded

Microsoft has announced that a remastered version of classic Xbox game Gears Of War will be available on PlayStation later this year.

Gears Of War was originally released in 2006 as an Xbox 360 exclusive with the third-person shooter spawning a number of sequels. The most recent Gears Of War was released back in 2019 though prequel E-Day is due to launch in the near future.

Last night (May 5), Microsoft confirmed a remastered version of the original Gears Of War would be released later this year. Gears Of War: Reloaded will launch August 26 for Xbox Series X/S consoles, PC and Game Pass. It will also be available on the PlayStation 5 for the very first time.

Gears Of War: Reloaded is a celebration of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises,” Microsoft wrote in an announcement blog. “Featuring 4K resolution, 120 FPS support, and the ultimate multiplayer experience with cross-progression and cross-play, across all platforms, this is the definitive way to experience the game that started it all.” As well as the original game, players will also get access to all the post-launch downloadable content.

“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears Of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears Of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever.”

A remastered version of Gears Of War was released for Xbox users back in 2015 but anyone who owns Ultimate will be given a free upgrade to the new Reloaded game.

Earlier this year it was rumoured Gears Of War and a number of other previously exclusive Xbox games would be released on “rival” platforms. It comes after Xbox boss Phil Spencer made exclusive titles such as Hi-Fi Rush and Sea Of Thieves available for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch last year as part of his “vision for the future”.

“I’m going to learn about our partnership with other platforms. I’m going to learn about what happens with our players,” he said at the time. “I don’t think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform.” Reports say that Halo and Microsoft Flight Simulator games could also make the leap to PlayStation later this year.

Speaking about the first wave of Xbox-exclusives coming to other consoles, Spencer said he was “pleased” with the results but, as of November 2024, claimed it was “too soon” to make a decision about Halo. “I do not see red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not’,” he added.

In other news, Rockstar has finally announced the release date for GTA 6 but fans aren’t excited about having to wait another 12 months.
