The Tom Hardy action-thriller Havoc is riding high in the Netflix charts, but why was the film delayed for four years? Find all the details below.

The film is directed by Gareth Evans, with Hardy being joined by co-stars Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker. It was released onto Netflix on April 25 and quickly rose to the Number One spot on the streamer’s global charts.

The official synopsis reads: “Walker (Tom Hardy) is a bruised detective fighting his way through the criminal underworld threatening to engulf his entire city. In the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, Walker finds himself with a number of factions on his tail; a vengeful crime syndicate, a crooked politician, as well as his fellow cops. When attempting to rescue the politician’s estranged son, whose involvement in the drug deal starts to unravel a deep web of corruption and conspiracy, he is forced to confront the demons of his past”.

The film brings together two big talents in the action genre – Hardy, famous for his tough roles in films like Legend and Lawless; and Evans, who is considered one of the most exciting writer-directors around following the cult success of The Raid movies and his TV series Gangs Of London.

As well as Havoc, Hardy is also working on an as yet unnamed Guy Ritchie series. Late last year, it was reported he offered to step in and pay wages owed to its crew.

The film was shot in Wales in 2021, with a press release from the Welsh government even heralding it at the time as one of the biggest movies ever to be shot in the country.

However, after principal photography concluded in October 2021, Evans and his team realised that additional filming was necessary, in part due to adverse weather conditions during filming and in part because certain story threads needed further enhancement.

As Evans told Film Stories this year, “We wrapped the film in October 2021… and then we delivered an edit and we all felt, collectively, ‘Okay, this needs maybe a week’s worth of work to be done.’ Just to kind of iron out some story threads that needed a little bit more clarity here and there.”

Scheduling for the additional filming proved difficult, with Hardy and Whitaker involved in other projects. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike only further complicated matters. Eventually, reshoots took place in July 2024.

Evans then went into a meticulous post-production phase, striving for a “blistering, fast-paced action-thriller with nods to the Hong Kong cinema that I grew up watching,” as he told Empire late last year.
