Watch live: NASA astronauts return to Earth after 9 months on International Space Station

NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are expected to return to Earth Tuesday afternoon after more than nine months on the International Space Station.

The SpaceX Crew-9 mission launched late last week with astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to retrieve the Boeing Starliner crew. Williams and Wilmore were part of Boeing's first crewed mission to space last June, which was meant to last just eight to 10 days. The initial launch was delayed several times due to thruster failures and helium leaks, and the capsule returned to Earth without its crew in September.

The return was originally scheduled for February, but NASA pushed the date back to early March. The agency said the timeline change allowed its teams to “complete processing” on a new spacecraft for the mission.

The SpaceX capsule is expected to splash down off the coast of Florida around 4:45 p.m. EDT.
