Fighting simply runs in the Malott family.
UFC welterweight Mike Malott’s younger brother, Jeff Malott, registered his first career NHL fighting major Saturday night during Hockey Night in Canada.
The younger Malott, a forward with the Los Angeles Kings, dropped the gloves with Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Brandon Carlo in the first period of a 3-1 Maple Leafs victory.
Following some brief pushing and shoving after a whistle in the Toronto end, both skaters began chucking knuckles.
The pair landed and ate heavy right hands throughout the scrap and the pair shared a laugh in the penalty box afterwards.
When asked about the fight after his team’s win, Carlo was apparently unaware of what Malott’s brother does for a living and any potential pointers he may have given his hockey-playing sibling over the years.
Jeff Malott, an undrafted 28-year-old out of Cornell University, has spent most of his professional career to date playing at the AHL level. Earlier this month, he registered his 200th career AHL point while representing the Ontario Reign.
Saturday was Malott’s third career NHL game. Prior to his call-up, he had registered 23 goals, 51 points and 80 penalty minutes in 61 games this season, his first with the Reign after four with the Manitoba Moose.
Mike Malott is 4-1 in the UFC, coming off a win over Trevin Giles in Edmonton this past November. His next fight will take place at UFC 315 in Montreal on May 10 against Charles Radtke.
