President Trump expressed confidence in the merits of his lawsuit against CBS News and its parent company Paramount Global amid growing speculation of a coming settlement between the two sides.
"The case we have against 60 Minutes, CBS, and Paramount is a true WINNER," the president wrote on his Truth Social website Wednesday morning, accusing the news network of "perpetrating a Giant FRAUD against the American People, the Federal Elections Commission, and the Federal Communications System."
Trump sued the company last year over a "60 Minutes" interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris that aired just before Election Day. The president argues it was edited to cast her in a more favorable light.
The New York Times reported late Tuesday that attorneys for the president and the Hollywood giant were set to begin mediation this week, and Paramount's owner Shari Redstone has expressed a desire to settle the case out of court.
Redstone is set to receive a major payday as part of the completion of an ongoing megamerger between Paramount and media giant Skydance, a deal that would need approval from the Trump administration to go through.
CBS News has been roiled by the ongoing saga, which led to the executive producer of "60 Minutes" resigning after writing to staff he could no longer preside over the news magazine program independently, given pressures from its corporate ownership.
Trump on Wednesday morning knocked the Times report on settlement talks, which quoted legal experts saying the president is on shaky constitutional grounds, given First Amendment protections. And he suggested potential legal action against the newspaper.
"They don’t mean that, they just have a non curable case of TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, possibly to the point where the Times’ interjection makes them liable for tortious interference, including in Elections, which we are intently studying," Trump wrote.
"The bottom line is that what 60 Minutes and its corporate owners have committed is one of the most egregious illegalities in Broadcast History."
