Long-range tracking figures for the upcoming live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon” are out with the film reportedly tracking for a $65-75 million opening weekend according to Box-Office Theory.
Short of the likely $100+ million opening weekend take of the live-action “Lilo & Stitch”, ‘Dragon’ is on course to have the best three-day debut haul of any film between now and the end of June.
It is coming in ahead of Friday-Sunday projections for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” with $59-67 million, “Karate Kid: Legends” with $45-56 million, “Ballerina: From the World of John Wick” with $39-48 million, and “Final Destination: Bloodlines” with $28-35 million.
As the outlet points out, the original animated trilogy is beloved by audiences of all sorts of ages while returning director Dean DeBlois appears to have ensured a fairly faithful adaptation of the first film.
Even though pre-sales are incredibly early, interest and awareness are already healthy among parents, with women over 35 going particularly well at this point.
The only competition it opens against that week is “Materialists” starring Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. That is tracking for a debut just shy of $10 million.
