The Oscars To Finally Award Stunts In 2027

After many years of campaigning for it, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have confirmed that the Oscars are finally creating a category for stunts.

The first Academy Award for Achievement in Stunt Design will be handed out in 2027, starting with the 100th Academy Awards.

Category rules for eligibility and voting will be announced in 2027 with specifics of the award’s presentation to be determined by the Board of Governors at a future date.

Multiple attempts have been made to try and get the Academy to recognise stunts, all to no avail until now. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement:

“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking. We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”

More than 100 stunt professionals make up members of the Academy’s Production and Technology Branch.
