Takeaways: Golden Knights’ line shuffling pays off; Lightning have life
Both the Golden Knights and Lightning picked up pivotal victories in their respective series on Saturday, as both squads showed new signs of life after consecutive losses. @EmmySadler has the takeaways from both series-swinging wins.

Ivan Barbashev scored the overtime winner as the Vegas Golden Knights grabbed hold of Game 4 by a score of 4-3 against the Minnesota Wild to steady the series score at 2-2.
It’s a best-of-three from here, and thanks to head coach Bruce Cassidy’s lineup changes on Saturday, it’s safe to say we could be seeing a different Vegas team hit the ice going forward.
After a season that required significant line-shuffling while navigating injuries up and down the lineup, Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy was taking a patient approach in the Golden Knights’ first-round series against the Wild.
Through three games of the series, his top line of Barbashev, Jack Eichel, and Mark Stone had been quiet, held without a single point.
Down 2-1 in the series heading into Saturday’s Game 4, Cassidy opened up the matchup in Minnesota with that same top trio intact, and while Barbashev and Eichel each finally got on the stat sheet when they assisted on Shea Theodore’s game-opening power-play goal in the first period, it was clear once Minnesota took the lead in the second — and outworked Vegas up to that point, too, picking their pockets in the neutral zone and generally applying stifling pressure at every opportunity — that something needed to change.

With Vegas in danger of going down 3-1 in the series, the time for patience had run out.
So, out came the blender. Midway through the second frame, Cassidy broke up the three linemates, scattering each to a different line — Eichel was joined by William Karlsson and Reilly Smith, Stone moved down to flank Tanner Pearson and Brett Howden, and Barbashev was placed alongside Nicolas Roy and Keegan Kolesar.
It worked. The Golden Knights we saw in the second half of this game didn’t just keep pace with the Wild’s puck-battling, tight-checking style, but looked able to set the pace at times. And the production came alive.
The line changes didn’t stop there, with Stone eventually suiting up alongside Tomas Hertl, the two collaborating on a goal (whether Hertl was aware or not). Stone, who earlier in the frame had suffered a scary cut near his eye on a high-stick from Wild defender Zeev Buium, saw a clear path to a goal when he delivered the puck to a horizontal Hertl, who’d tangled in front of the net. The puck went off Hertl and past Filip Gustavsson for one of the weirdest goals of the post-season so far.

In the end, it was Barbashev who made the greatest impact from his new bottom-six digs, scoring the overtime winner after Minnesota couldn’t clear the puck late in overtime. Roy and Smith assisted.
Now, the question becomes… what do the Vegas lines look like for Game 5?
Hill rewards Cassidy for sticking with No. 1; Gustavsson stays strong
Cassidy’s lineup loyalty heading into Game 4 wasn’t limited to his top line. After pulling starter Adin Hill Thursday following four goals on 21 shots through two periods of play, Cassidy gave his starter a vote of confidence by giving him the nod for Game 4. It was the right call — while Hill wasn’t as busy as his Wild counterpart at the other end of the rink, he was locked in, stopping 29 of 32 shots, including 10 in overtime.
His most game-changing save came just after the halfway point of the third period, when he stumped Yakov Trenin on a breakaway to preserve what was at that point a 3-3 tie. If that goes in, knowing Minnesota’s proficiency with third-period leads, we might be talking about a very different series outlook for Vegas right now.
As strong as Hill was in this winning effort, praise should be heaped on Minnesota’s Filip Gustavsson. He faced a barrage of 46 shots Saturday afternoon, spread evenly across four periods of play. He was sensational, and is expected to be locked in once again as the series shifts back to Vegas on Tuesday.

Earlier on Saturday, with the Battle of Florida shifting to Sunrise, the Tampa Bay Lightning came to life in a crucial Game 3 with a 5-1 win to get their first victory of the series.
Lightning have life again with high-scoring win
There were some wins within Saturday’s win for Tampa Bay, too.
It took the Lightning 153:17 to get their first lead of the series with Nick Paul’s second-period goal on Saturday. They didn’t give it back for the remainder of the game, instead piling on a few more goals.
After scoring just twice through the first two games of the series (Sergei Bobrovsky allowed two goals in Game 1 before shutting Tampa Bay out in Game 2), the Lightning’s offence looked alive and well with a five-game effort, led by three-point nights for both Jake Guentzel (1G, 2A) and Nikita Kucherov (3A).

Defensively and in the crease, too, the team looked like their regular-season selves. After the Panthers put up a combined eight goals through the first two games, Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 33 of 34 shots to hold Florida to just a single score.
Can they bring this momentum into Game 4 Monday night? That’s the biggest question, but within it is another. Three games into Round 1 and we still haven’t seen the league’s regular-season points leader, Nikita Kucherov, light the lamp. With three helpers to his name on Saturday, he, too, looks like he’s just warming up. Can he get back to his high-scoring ways in time to get the Lightning back in this series?
Power-play units cool off
Tampa Bay’s power play was a well-oiled machine in the regular season and considering how the playoffs started — Guentzel got the Lightning on the board in Game 1 with a power-play goal — it looked like that success might continue.
Instead, it’s run cold in the two games since, resulting in Tampa Bay (ranked fifth in PP percentage in the regular season) sitting second last in the category in the playoffs so far with just a single power-play goal on 13 opportunities. (The only team worse is New Jersey, whose red-hot regular-season power play has failed to register a single point against Carolina’s stifling penalty kill.) While Florida’s own PP found success in Game 1 with three goals, it was also shut out the last two games. With so much rough stuff in this series so far, it’s hard not to see special teams making a major impact, for better or for worse.
Should Tkachuk be suspended for Hagel-like hit?
One game after Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel earned himself a one-game suspension for a dangerous late hit on an unsuspecting Aleksander Barkov Thursday night, Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk may have landed himself in hot water after delivering a similarly late hit on Jake Guentzel Saturday.
Hagel was issued a five-minute major for interference midway through the third period of Game 2, and Tkachuk got the same call for his own third-period infraction, which occurred with exactly five minutes to go in Saturday’s game. The calls on the ice were the same. Will the discipline follow suit?

While the hits were not identical — Hagel’s hit was high, and he appeared to make at least partial contact with Barkov’s head — it’s easy to connect the dots on the similarities beyond just time served in the penalty box. Like Barkov, Guentzel did not have the puck when he was hit (though, Guentzel had previously handled it, then passed it; but Tkachuk’s hit was undoubtedly late).
Like Barkov, Guentzel was caught unaware of the approaching checker, as the play had moved on. While Tkachuk did not appear to make any contact with Guentzel’s head, it was still a dangerous play that officials have been actively trying to eliminate from the game.
The good news for both squads is that neither Barkov nor Guentzel sustained a serious injury on either hit. Barkov left Game 2 after Hagel’s hit, appearing shaken up by the play but ultimately okay to suit up for Game 3, and Guentzel remained in the game on Saturday.

Asked following the matchup what he thought of the play, Guentzel kept his words reserved but did express that he felt the hit was late.
“I passed the puck and it felt like a long time after I got hit,” Guentzel said. “I’m sure the league’s going to take a look at it. We know the history of what’s happened the last couple games. I’m sure they’ll do their job.”
Lightning head coach Jon Cooper is certainly keeping tabs on that recent history, too, as evidenced by his pointed remarks that mirrored Paul Maurice’s comments about the increased physicality of Game 2. Asked about Tkachuk’s hit, Cooper said simply, “The only players we hit are the ones with pucks.” Sound familiar?
