Jalen Ramsey’s time in Miami appears to be nearing an end.
The star cornerback and the Dolphins are mutually set to explore trade options, Miami general manager Chris Grier revealed Tuesday at the team’s pre-draft press conference.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that there is no set deadline on a deal, but with the NFL Draft nine days away, a trade before April 24 could benefit all parties involved.
“After a couple weeks of discussions … we decided it was probably in the best interest for all parties involved to move forward,” said Grier.
He added that Ramsey did not ask for a trade or a salary tweak.
However, a trade is not imminent. “If he’s here, we’ll deal with it,” said Grier.
Ramsey’s hefty deal could complicate a trade this season. The 30-year-old is under contract until 2029, and Ramsey is guaranteed $24.2 million this season but has no guaranteed money after 2025, per OverTheCap. He already has been paid $4 million , so any team potentially acquiring Ramsey would be on the hook for the remaining $20.2 million.
With such a large cap figure for 2025, opposing teams may decide to wait until next season to take him on, or Miami may wait to lessen the dead-cap hit.
Since being selected fifth overall by the Jaguars in the 2016 draft, Ramsey has been one of the top cornerbacks in the league. He’s a seven-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro and a Super Bowl champion.
But the Florida State product is coming off a down year by his standards, recording two interceptions while failing to make the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2019.
In his two seasons in South Beach, Ramsey recorded 82 tackles, 16 passes defended and five interceptions.
With the Dolphins looking to clear cap space, Grier was also asked if a trade could be on the horizon for star wideout Tyreek Hill. While there are no plans to trade Hill, an astronomical offer may change things.
“That’s not anything that we’re pursuing,” said the GM. “Who knows? If someone wants to come and give me two first-round picks, we’ll consider it.”
