Simpson showing he's the real deal with another P10 qualifying performance at Indy GP

It’s now been two consecutive weekends for IndyCar Series sophomore Kyffin Simpson scoring 10th-place qualifying performances.

The kid from the Cayman Islands split Josef Newgarden and Marcus Armstrong last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park where he made it into the Firestone Fast 12 for the second time in his brief career, and the 20-year-old did it again on Friday by throwing the No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda between Alexander Rossi and Santino Ferrucci to secure a fifth-row start for the Sonsio Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

It’s also the second straight weekend where teammate Alex Palou captured pole position and Simpson out-qualified teammate Scott Dixon, who starts 16th.

Compared to those he’s racing against in the top 10, Simpson has almost no name recognition, but if he keeps it up, he’s found something in his second year of IndyCar competition that just might raise his profile among fans.

Better still, he wasn’t entirely pleased with his performance.

“We really felt like we had the pace to make it into the Fast Six,” Simpson said. “Just need to work on putting the lap together a little bit better for next time. It’s another great opportunity from a good starting spot.”
