Damien Chazelleis a filmmaker who earned so much goodwill based on his first three films that he was given the resources needed to make a totally ridiculous, ambitious epic that was almost immediately criticized for its indulgence. After Whiplash became an instant classic, La La Landwas an awards season juggernaut, and First Man was met with mostly positive reviews. Chazelle crafted Babylon, a historical epic that examined filmmaking in the 1920s and ‘30s. With over three hours of dark comedy, sex, drugs, and frequent moments of surrealism, Babylon became a massive box office flop, yet still managed to attract the attention of a minority that secretly believed it to be a masterpiece.
