Scottie Scheffler had an absurdly dominant win at the CJ Cup, strong form ahead of PGA Championship
Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images Scottie Scheffler was out of this world in his first win of the season. Call me old fashioned, but -31 is an insane score for a PGA Tour event. I doubt that Scottie Scheffler cares too much. The world number one was absolutely dominant at TPC Craig Ranch in the CJ Cup and did indeed post a winning score of 31-under par. Erik Van Rooyen finished in second, qualifying for the Truist in the process by the way, eight strokes back. Imagine shooting 23-under par and not winning! It was Scottie’s first win of the season for anybody keeping score at home and his 14th overall. He officially became the 72nd player in Tour history to tally 14 wins. The victory also marks four consecutive seasons in which Scheffler has emerged as a winner. Obviously it has been a long time that Scheffler has been this dominant figure in our lives from a golf perspective. He is now sitting on 103 weeks as the world number one, the third-longest streak of all time. While people will offer thoughts on the course setup last week it is worth noting that you can only play the course in front of you. Scheffler did just that and tied the lowest score in a 72-hole event on Tour since 1983: 253 - Scottie Scheffler, 2025 CJ CUP Byron Nelson 253 - Ludvig Aberg, 2023 RSM Classic 253 - Justin Thomas, 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii 254 - Dustin Johnson, 2020 FedEx St. Jude Championship 254 - Tommy Armour III, 2003 Valero Texas Open As far as the players who Scheffler tied in Ludvig Aberg and Justin Thomas, they are both winners this season in their own right and of signature events on top of it. Aberg won the Genesis Invitational while Thomas took home the RBC Heritage. In between those things Rory McIlroy won The PLAYERS and The Masters! McIlroy also won at Pebble Beach prior to the Geneis. The overall point here is that professional golf is in a very solid place. Next week will bring with it the PGA Championship where all of these players will be looking to come out on top at Quail Hollow. But first... another signature event in the Truist Championship!
