Scott McTominay reveals new Napoli nickname as he breaks 63-year Serie A record

Scott McTominay is enjoying the best goalscoring season of his career – with his latest double sending Napoli top of the Serie A table. The result has seen Antonio Conte‘s side move three points clear of Inter Milan at the top with four games to go as they capitalised on their rivals’ 1-0 defeat to Roma. It’s now five goals in McTominay’s last three matches, having scored the winner in his side’s 1-0 victory over Monza in their previous outing. The Scotland international now boasts 12 goals in all competitions this term – two more than he has scored in any single season in his career. With 11 goals in the Italian top-flight, he has broken a 63-year Serie A record which had been held by United legend Denis Law. No other Scotsman has now scored more goals in a single Serie A campaign, with Law managing 11 for Torino in the 1962/63 season. Meanwhile, McTominay is also the first Scot to reach double figures in a single season in one of Europe’s top five leagues since Charlie Adam‘s 12-goal haul for Blackpool in 2010/11. He and teammate Billy Gilmour are now on course to be the first Scottish stars in history to lift the famous Scudetto title. It should come as no surprise that McTominay has established himself as a firm fan favourite in Naples. Fans have affectionately dubbed him as McTerminator, MacGyver and the bottle opener – for unlocking games. He stated: “You can see the player he is, I can only say that he is a special guy, golden, always smiling and happy, an incredible worker. We are so lucky to have him. “From the first day, we’ve been working with incredible dedication. “It’s only right to believe, to fight for this objective, because it has been such a long journey. We know how hard we worked to get here.”
