According to multiple reports, the PWHL is set to announce an expansion team in Vancouver next week in a major press conference featuring representatives from the Province and City of Vancouver.
Postmedia‘s Patrick Johnston was first to report the news.
Johnston further reported that the team will play at the Pacific Coliseum in East Vancouver, once home to the WHL’s Vancouver Giants. The Athletic‘s Hailey Salvian added that the team is expected to play as early as next season.
“We’re continuing to finalize decisions related to expansion and look forward to sharing more details soon,” a league spokesperson said in a statement given to Salvian.
The PWHL visited Vancouver as part of the Takeover Tour in January, where a game between the Montreal Victoire and Toronto Sceptres drew a sold-out crowd of 19,038 fans, which ranks fourth-highest in the league’s history.
Vancouver would be the first expansion team for the PWHL, which is in the midst of their sophomore season. The original six teams are located in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, New York and Minnesota.
