Spencer Strider is heading back to the injured list after just one start.

The Atlanta Braves announced Monday that Strider will go on the 15-day IL with a strained hamstring.

That it’s not an injury to his pitching arm is undoubtedly positive news after the right-hander just underwent nearly a year’s recovery from elbow surgery, but still disappointing nonetheless for Atlanta to lose its ace in the midst of a slow start.

The Athletic‘s David O’Brien reported that Strider suffered the injury while playing catch on Monday.

Strider made his season debut on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing two runs and five hits in five-plus innings of what ended as a 3-1 loss.

“He’s extremely important to our club and especially to our rotation,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said at the time.

On his path back to the Braves rotation this season, Strider pitched in two spring training games and made three rehab outings in triple-A.

A breakout star in 2022, Strider finished fourth in Cy Young voting in 2023 after leading the National League with 20 wins and 281 strikeouts over 186.2 innings.

Over his two appearances in 2024, the six-foot-tall Strider allowed seven earned runs in 9.0 innings while striking out 12.

The Braves have yet to announce who will fill Strider’s rotation spot against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Atlanta recalled right-handed reliever Michael Petersen to take Strider’s roster spot as it opens the series on Monday night.

Atlanta enters the series with an 8-13 record, sitting last in the NL East. The Braves did, however, complete a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins over the weekend.
