‘Red Sonja’ Reboot Gears up For UK Release This Year

Millennium’s new take on comic book character Red Sonja has gone through a few different iterations over the years, but the reboot is finally much closer to release. After a two-year post-production period, Red Sonja is finally gearing up for a UK release.

Signature Entertainment has picked up UK and Irish rights to the action fantasy with plans to release this year. Deadline notes that the film previously sold in international markets, though no updates on international release plans as of yet.

Matilda Lutz (A Classic Horror Story, Revenge) stars as “barbarian huntress Red Sonja, who must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against the evil tyrant Emperor Draygan and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.”

Starring alongside Lutz are Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Sheroes), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), Luca Pasqualino (Snowpiercer), Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Martyn Ford (Final Score), Ben Radcliffe (Cuban Fury), Eliza Matengu (Predestination), Veronica Ferres (Crisis), Phillip Winchester (Strike Back) and Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead).

M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directs the movie.

Signature Entertainment’s Acquisitions Manager Begüm Kayacan Parodi told Deadline, “Red Sonja epitomizes the kind of film we’re looking for at Signature – an epic story in a fantasy-laden world with a strong commercial feel to its execution, which made it immediately appealing to us. We’re looking forward to introducing UK and Irish audiences to Matilda Lutz’s sword-swinging huntress later this year.”

Red Sonja, played by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 film, is a comic book heroine created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics back in 1973. As for the new reboot, different versions were in development for at least 20 years as many different writers, directors and financiers grappled with the project. Now that Red Sonja has been acquired for a UK release, it sounds like we’re one major step forward for the long-gestating reboot to finally arrive.
