Paul Merson sends message to Man Utd over signing £122m Premier League duo

United are set for a major rebuild under the Portuguese head coach, regardless of whether or not they beat Tottenham in the Europa League final. Their first priority will be to strengthen their attacking options with centre-forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scoring just seven Premier League goals combined. Matheus Cunha has emerged as their top target having recorded 17 goals and six assists in 33 appearances for Wolves across all competitions. The attacking midfielder has a £62.5million release clause in his contract and has attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, but it is believed that United are leading the race for his signature. Arsenal legend Merson backs the transfer but has highlighted one major concern about the Brazilian, telling Sportskeeda: ‘Matheus Cunha is expected to leave Wolves this summer with Manchester United strongly linked with wanting to sign him. ‘I think he’ll enjoying playing alongside Bruno Fernandes, they could shine together. But the only problem I have with Cunha is the fact that he misses six or seven games in a season due to his disciplinary issues. The second came in March during Wolves FA Cup defeat at Bournemouth when the 26-year-old hit, kicked and head-butted Milos Kerkez in shocking scenes. Bryan Mbeumo has scored 18 goals in the Premier League this season (Photo: Getty) In addition to Cunha, United are also looking at Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo who is valued at £60m. The 25-year-old is enjoying by far his best season for the Bees, with 18 goals and seven assists in the Premier League – only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, Erling Haaland and Chris Wood have found the back of the net more this season. Mbeumo’s contract expires next year, with Brentford captain Christian Norgaard recently admitting that he is expecting the Cameroon international to leave west London in the summer. And Merson believes he’d be an excellent addition to United’s squad, adding: ‘The real challenge for Brentford this summer will be whether they can keep hold of players like Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa. ‘Whoever gets Mbeumo, will be signing a player and a half. He’s a proper team player and has added goals to his game this season. I’m convinced he will join a big club this summer.’ For now, Amorim’s focus is just on preparing the Red Devils for their final Premier League games and Europa League final, starting with a home clash against struggling West Ham on Sunday.
