One of ‘The Simpsons’ Funniest Season 5 Scenes Was Also Its Most Controversial

The Simpsons' Season 5 episode “Burns’ Heir” sees Bart (Nancy Cartwright) named by Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer), impressed by him being a “creature of pure malevolence,” as his legal heir. It’s a heartwarming episode, in a way that only The Simpsons can do, in which Bart realizes how much he loves his family, but only after putting them through hell. It featuresone of the series’ most iconic lines: “Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is never try.” One of its funniest scenes, controversially, didn’t air initially.
