‘No it’s still shockingly bad’ – Max Verstappen jokes about strained George Russell relationship
The temperature appears to have finally settled on one of the hottest topics in Formula 1 in 2024. Lando Norris took victory in Australia in the first race of the new season, and he was followed home by reigning champion Max Verstappen and countryman George Russell. SkyNorris was stuck between two warring parties[/caption] Placed between them on both the podium and post-race press conference, Norris would have had the role of a peace broker had it been 2024. Verstappen and Russell clashed in astonishing circumstances to end the campaign when the Dutchman accused the Brit of lying to the stewards in Qatar in order to get him a qualifying penalty. His Mercedes rival struck back in brutal fashion, calling the four-time champion a ‘bully’ and alleging that Verstappen threatened to ‘put me on my f***ing head in the wall’. Tensions didn’t simmer down as they pair refused to sit together at an end of season dinner, and then at the F1 75 launch event they both alluded to the feud being alive and well. However, in Melbourne they were seen chatting ahead of the top three drivers press conference, and were asked how things were between them. Picking up his microphone after glancing at Russell, Verstappen said: “No it’s still shockingly bad,” to much laughter. He then admitted: “No it’s all good,” before Russell commented: “What he said.” Race winner Norris was giggling along between them, and that’s certainly been the case for much of the rest of the 20-man grid. The drivers recently began an annual dinner after the Abu Dhabi finale, and 2024’s edition proved to be extra spicy, particularly when the grid tried to make the pair sit next to each other. Revealing how things went down, new Red Bull driver and Verstappen’s teammate, Liam Lawson said: “It’s crazy how many messages I’ve had about this, people want to know what went down. Verstappen cracked the room upSky It’s the closest the pair have been in a whileInstagram “This is f****** funny. It’s really funny. We rock up and we’re at this big table, me and Yuki [Tsunoda] arrived together, we weren’t the first ones there, there were probably like six or seven people there. “As the table was filling up, there pretty much one side of the table was full and opposite me was Max and then there were three chairs left. “George hadn’t turned up and we were like ‘this is perfect’ everyone arriving was like ‘fill this side of the table so there’s a spot next to Max’. “George arrives and Max is like ‘Mate, we’ve saved a seat for you’ and George just picks up the chair and walks to the other side of the table and sits with Lewis [Hamilton]. “We thought it would be funny. It wasn’t. It was funny for us, but George didn’t say anything. We kind of expected them to put it on hold for the drivers’ dinner.”
