Saginaw Spirit star Michael Misa hits 60-goal mark

Michael Misa is having one of the most productive seasons for an NHL Draft-eligible player in OHL history.

The Saginaw Spirit star hit the 60-goal mark in his 64th game of the season on Friday against the Soo Greyhounds.

The 18-year-old Misa, from Oakville, Ont., is now tied for fourth with John Tucker (Kitchener Rangers, 1982-83) in goals for a season for a draft-eligible player in the OHL.

Tony Tanti (81 goals, Oshawa Generals, 1980-81), Eric Lindros (71, Oshawa, 1990-91) and Patrick Kane (62, London Knights, 2006-07) are the only players ahead of Misa and Tucker.

Misa, who helped the host Spirit win the Memorial Cup last year, also leads the OHL with 128 points this season.

Friday’s game was meaningless in the standings for the Spirit, who are locked into fourth in the Western Conference and will face the Erie Otters in the first round of the playoffs beginning next week.

Misa was listed as No. 2 on Sam Cosentino’s draft board for Sportsnet earlier this week. Erie defenceman Matthew Schaefer was first, but won’t play in the playoff series as he continues to recover from a collarbone injury suffered while playing for Canada at the world junior championship.

Canada did not select Misa for its world junior team.
