Google just confirmed it’s discontinuing software updates for the first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. Starting October 25, 2025, if you have a model from 2011, 2012, or the 2014 Europe version, you’ll lose remote control features.

You’ll still be able to tweak the temperature and adjust schedules directly on the device, but you won’t be able to manage it through your phone or Google Assistant anymore. At least the schedules you have already programmed will keep running. Google also said that this won’t affect newer Nest models and that soon, you’ll be able to manage thermostat schedules straight from the Google Home app.

Over in Europe, it’s a bit more complicated. Google is winding down Nest thermostat sales altogether once the current stock of the 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E runs out. They’re blaming “unique” heating challenges for the move, but it basically sounds like they’re done with the market for good.

To soften the blow, Google’s offering a $130 discount on the 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat in the US. Canadians get $160 off, while European customers can grab a Tado Smart Thermostat X-Starter Kit at half price.

Google says impacted Nest owners will receive an email with a personalized link for their discount. So, if you’ve been thinking about an upgrade, now might not be a bad time to move on.
