MSCHF creates furniture collection from "pile of car parts"

Art and design collective MSCHF has integrated auto parts from Mercedes-AMG vehicles into a furniture collection, including a couch with headlight armrests and a step-on trash can with car pedals during NYCxDesign.

The MSCHF x Mercedes-AMG collection, exhibited on plinths in MSCHF's Greenpoint studio, includes eleven furniture pieces, clothing, and accessories, such as an air freshener.

The pieces range from a loveseat with headlights embedded in its armrests to a triangular floor lamp with a seat belt arm that buckles into place to turn on.

The Not for Automotive Use collection was informed by a MSCHF visit to AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, where its team was "looking at stripped-down cars". It also takes cues from Milanese designer Achille Castiglioni, who often incorporated found objects in his works.

"We kicked off the project about a year ago, and our initial design exercises began from looking at a pile of car parts," said MSCHF co-chief creative officer Kevin Wiesner.

"We wanted a balance of furniture types in the collection, but also to prioritise the physical actions we had the most fun with when we were playing with the pieces."

Other pieces include a chair made out of three headrests fused together with a network of yellow pipes and a shelving unit with seat belts stretched taut around its frame.

The studio also used a car grill to create cooking grates for a working BBQ grill with a large Mercedes logo at the centre.

"We haven't put it through its paces yet since it needed to stay pretty for display here at our studio, but we're all waiting for the chance to line up a couple dozen kebabs on there," said Wiesner.

The studio explained the collection is made using new parts sourced from AMG vendors, as the project seeks to explore the objects' "contextualization or misuse, not so much their literal recycling".

The exhibition marks the first time MSCHF has opened its Greenpoint workshop to the public since it was founded in 2019.

Recently, the studio sliced off the tips of Italian furniture company Gufram's popular Pratone chair for a New York exhibit and partnered with shoe brand Crocs to create big yellow boots.
