Mikel Arteta warned Arsenal fans will turn against him after Champions League failure: ‘You have to win something’

Mikel Arteta has been warned serious questions will be asked about his position as Arsenal manager after they crashed out of the Champions League. The Gunners were beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Paris Saint-Germain as they missed out on a place in the final for the first time since 2006. But it is PSG, who have now beaten three Premier League sides in a row, with Arsenal following Liverpool and Aston Villa in succumbing to the French champions, that will play Inter Milan in the final on May 31. Now it means another trophyless season for Arteta, who still only has the 2020 FA Cup as his lone piece of major silverware at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal are on course to finish a third season in a row in second place, but will be a distant runner-up to Liverpool this campaign. Speaking after the final whistle in Paris, talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham said: “I think there will be recriminations, there will be questions asked. “You can’t say it’s a pathetic effort and Arsenal have rolled over, they’ve just not quite been good enough. But when the dust settles on this, Arsenal are out, and they’re not going to win the title in a season where Man City are nowhere near it. “There will now be questions asked about Mikel Arteta and whether he is the right man to see that job through to those major trophies.” In response, former Premier League striker Darren Bent warned that Arsenal fans could now turn against him. You’ve won the FA Cup for Arsenal, you’ve got us to a Champions League semi-final, you’ve got Arsenal fans believing, again, that they can get over the line. “But the fact that they got to a quarter-final last year, a semi-final, and haven’t won the league yet, I think there’s gonna be some serious questions asked about Mikel Arteta.” Arteta has been Arsenal manager since 2019 Arteta was hired in December 2019 and after back-to-back eighth place finishes has turned the Gunners into title contenders.
