Mayer wants more of the same

Mikaela Mayer enters Saturday’s contest with a professional boxing record detailing 20 wins against two defeats and no draws. The 34-year-old from Colorado has fought 164 competitive rounds as a professional fighter and carries a 25% knockout average after felling four of her previous opponents. The 5’ 9” orthodox boxer with a 66” reach is currently ranked number one in the world at the weight and hopes that’s the case next week.

The first loss on Mikaela’s card was inflicted by Alycia Baumgardner in London on a split decision back in October 2022. Her most recent reverse came against Natasha Jonas in Liverpool on a split decision last January. Since losing to Jonas in a gripping contest, Mayer has fought only once, beating Saturday’s opponent in New York. She needed the win, as back-to-back defeats would’ve spun Mayer down the rankings. It was close, but Mayer deserves credit for grinding out the win.

At the end of the first meeting, the scorecards read Mayer 97-93 and 96-94, with one judge scoring the fight a 95-95 dead heat, hence the majority aspect of the decision. Mayer plots to secure another win over her British opponent, but she won’t want to leave things in the balance and knows she must be much more decisive this time to win the battle and finally end the war between the American and Brit.

Ryan wants her revenge

Saturday’s fight in Las Vegas certainly isn’t a must-win for the progressive Sandy Ryan, but the fighter from Derbyshire, England knows failure to win could shunt her down the pecking order. It could be many months or even years before the progressive Ryan is back in a position to challenge for major honours. 

Defeat would derail the away fighter’s progress, but a win would supercharge her career. Returning home with the world title will capture the attention of the top fighters, managers and promoters, meaning some glittering offers will arrive on Ryan’s desk on Monday morning. Does she have what it takes to win and become champ? Sandy’s performance against Mayer and her recent form shows she can hold her own at the top level.

Ryan travels to Nevada with a professional record detailing seven wins against two defeats and one draw. She’s currently ranked number three in the world behind her opponent and fellow Brit Lauren Price who we saw in action when beating Natasha Jonas in London earlier this month. That was an impressive victory for the Welsh fighter, but a win for Ryan this weekend would eclipse that performance and push Sandy into the number-one slot.
