Mets’ Juan Soto expecting hostile reaction in first game vs. Yankees

When Juan Soto steps up to the plate at Yankee Stadium, he isn’t expecting to be greeted with much enthusiasm.

For the first time, the New York Mets star will go up against the New York Yankees since deciding to sign a massive $15-year, $765 million deal in the off-season.

He expects his return to bring out a lot of emotions from Yankees fans.

“It’s going to be 50,000 against one. They’re going to try to get on me, you know, Soto told Jon Heyman of The New York Post. It’s part of it. Whatever they do, they have the right to do it. I’m just going to go out there and do my stuff. I’m just going to try to focus on my game.”

Soto has been off to a slow start since joining the Mets, hitting .255/.380/.465 with eight home runs and 20 RBI.

Despite the tough start, the 26-year-old personally has no regrets about his decision to join the Mets, who sit first in the NL East.

“No, no. I made a decision, and I’m happy that I made it,” Soto told Heyman. “You look around. We have an unbelievable team. And it’s going to be a good team for a long time.”

The Yankees made a big push to try and retain Soto but wouldn’t meet all the demands that he had in free agency, including a free suite.

“Some high-end players that make a lot of money for us, if they want suites they buy them … whether it’s CC (Sabathia), whether it’s (Aaron) Judge, whether it’s (Gerrit) Cole, whether it’s any of these guys,” general manager Brian Cashman said at the time. “We’ve gone through a process on previous negotiations where asks might have happened and this is what we did and we’re going to honour those, so no regrets there.”

The Yankees traded for Soto last season, and his addition helped them reach the World Series, which they lost in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs and 109 RBI in 157 games.

You can watch the Mets head to the Bronx to take on the Yankees on Sportsnet+, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
