Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that “Poor Things” and “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara is penning the script for Taika Waititi’s “Star Wars” film reports Screen Rant.
The news comes almost five years after Waititi was first linked with directing and co-writing a “Star Wars” film. The filmmaker was hot off successes like “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and “Jojo Rabbit” while the TV version of his mockumentary “What We Do in the Shadows” launched to strong reviews and good numbers.
He’d also had success directing episodes of “The Mandalorian” and scored good notices for his on screen role in HBO’s well-reviewed “Our Flag Means Death”. Things have slipped a bit since then – “Thor: Love and Thunder” scored mixed reviews, “Next Goal Wins” bombed, and the Apple TV+ remake of “Time Bandits” was cancelled after one season.
Added to that is several projects having stalled on him – first “Akira” which he became attached to in 2017, a planned reboot of “Flash Gordon,” and his “Star Wars” which he himself has spoken about briefly in the past saying it has been a difficult nut for him to crack.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who was originally attached as his co-writer, exit the project in early 2023 and Waititi’s commitments to “Klara and the Sun” have seemingly prevented more progress. Kennedy, ever the diplomat, told the outlet at Star Wars Celebration this weekend that she’s confident the film will happen:
“Taika is on Taika time… I’ve just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you’re ready and you can really devote the time, we’re going to do it. We’ll be waiting… I’m just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie.”
She also reportedly indicated that McNamara is working well with Waititi. The New Zealand filmmaker previously joked at an awards show that Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars” film will be out long before his – and that’s likely correct with “Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” scoring a May 2027 release date this week.
