Mazda to introduce Skyactiv-Z engine with next CX-5 in 2027; reducing investment in electrification, BEVs

Mazda will introduce its new Skyactiv-Z petrol engine with the next-generation CX-5 that is set to debut by the end of 2027, the Japanese manufacturer has revealed.

The Skyactiv-Z engine will comply with Euro 7 emissions regulations in Europe as well as LEV 4/Tier 4 in the United States, and it will use fewer electronic control units – less than half the present number, says Mazda – and fewer control software.

News of the Skyactiv-Z engine first emerged in November last year, when Mazda said that the engine will use the ‘lambda one’ combustion method, referring to the perfect balance of air and fuel in the combustion process.

The manufacturer will be reducing its investment in electrification from two trillion yen (RM59.2 billion) to around 1.5 trillion yen (RM44.4 billion) through optimisation of investments, such as for batteries. From this, the investment for battery procurement is expected to be halved from the original 750 billion yen (RM22.2 billion) amount.

Meanwhile for battery-electric vehicles, Mazda expects to reduce its investment into the development of BEVs by 40%, and development man-hours by 50% “compared to conventional development through collaboration and partnership,” said Mazda.

Mazda has entered into partnerships with other manufacturers for the development of EV technology, such as Toyota and Changan, the latter bringing the Mazda 6e – known as the EZ-6 in China – and this will be followed by an electric model developed by Mazda in-house. This EV model will be made in Japan for global markets, Mazda stated.
