Maple Leafs recall defenceman Dakota Mermis from AHL Marlies

The Toronto Maple Leafs recalled defenceman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Monday.

Mermis signed a one-year contract with the Maple Leafs ahead of the season but was claimed off of waivers by Utah in December. He played one game with Utah before he was put back on waivers and reclaimed by the Maple Leafs, who sent him down to the AHL.

The 31-year-old from Alton, Ill., has zero goals and six assists in 20 games with the Marlies.

To make room for Mermis, the Maple Leafs sent down defenceman Marshall Rifai to the Marlies.

Rifai, who has yet to play with the Maple Leafs this season, has nine points (three goals and six assists) in 44 games with the Marlies.

The 26-year-old from Beaconsfield, Que., made his NHL debut last season, appearing in two games with the Maple Leafs.

The Atlantic-leading Maple Leafs (38-20-2) look to extend their five-game winning streak when they host the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.
