Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson wins big on Grand National day with stunning 1-3 finish
It turns out Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t just a serial winner in football. The legendary Manchester United manager struck gold in the Grade 1 Maghull Novices’ Chase when one of his horses which he owns along with some close friends, Kalif Du Berlais, finished first past the post. Ferguson’s bank balance received a healthy boost thanks to a 1-3 finishGetty Victory in the race netted Ferguson a cool £67,524 for his troubles. Ferguson also picked up a tidy £12,732 thanks to his other horse, L’Eau Du Sud, which came third in the same race. The 1-3 finish ensured Ferguson took home just over £80,000 in prize money from one race. Unfortunately for Ferguson, he didn’t quite have the same luck in the Grand National, which was the race prior. Ferguson’s sole horse in the race, Hitman, was unfortunately one of 13 horses who pulled up short of the finish line. Another one of Ferguson’s horses, Protektorat, also delivered a healthy boost to his bank balance. Protektorat finished behind Jonbon in the Melling Chase on Friday. Although it may not have won, Protektorat still landed Ferguson just over £57,000. However, Protektorat trainer Dan Skelton was still upbeat about the ten-year-old’s performance. “We always know how well Protektorat will run for us and he always does,” Skelton said. Protektorat (right) delivered a big pay day for Ferguson at AintreeGetty “We’ve tried many times to beat Jonbon, but we can’t – we’re just not as good. “It doesn’t mean we’re not very proud of him. “That’s him done for the season and we can’t wait to do it all again next term.” The strong performance’s of Ferguson’s horses at Aintree follows on from the 83-year-old scooping his first win at Cheltenham via Caldwell Potter. The galloping grey finished first at the Jack Richards Novices’ Handicap Chase. Ferguson could barely hide his delight when he spoke to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra after the race. Caldwell Potter came up big for Ferguson at Cheltenham last monthGetty “I think the jumping won it,” Ferguson said. “What can I say? Great horse, it was a bonus. “Winning here last year with two was fantastic and doing it again this year is fantastic. Thank you very much.”
