British actress Emma Mackey (“Death on the Nile,” “Sex Education,” “Barbie”) has scored the coveted role of The White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” novels.
Singer Charli XCX was previously tipped for the role until yesterday when a report emerged that she was out and it came down to three with Mackey and Margaret Qualley being two of the candidates.
The new film is believed to be an adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ sixth published but first chronological Narnia novel “The Magician’s Nephew” and is intended to kick off a new franchise for Netflix.
In the books, the White Witch is named Jadis is the primary antagonist of the first several books in the Narnia series and is the one who plunges the land into an endless winter.
“The Magician’s Nephew” goes into her origins as the former ruler of a now dead world called Charn which she had slaughtered via a magical curse known as the Deplorable Word.
Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep are reportedly both being eyed for roles in the film, which is expected to begin filming this summer for a Thanksgiving 2026 release on IMAX screens. Gerwig wrote the script and is directing.
