A St. Louis Cardinals staple is hanging up his cleats.
Longtime infielder Matt Carpenter announced his retirement from baseball on Wednesday.
“I was very fortunate enough to play for some great organizations, and had quite a thrill being able to don the St. Louis Cardinals logo for many years,” Carpenter said on the Get in the Game podcast, hosted by former teammate Scott Linebrink.
Carpenter, 39, spent 14 seasons in MLB, breaking in with the Cardinals in 2011 and staying in St. Louis for 11 years before one-season stops with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres. He returned to St. Louis for his final season last year.
The Galveston, Texas, native leaves baseball with a .259 career batting average and .366 career on-base percentage to go with 179 home runs and 659 RBIs.
A three-time all-star, Carpenter was awarded the silver slugger at second base in 2013 after leading the National League in hits (199), runs (126) and doubles (55).
Carpenter was awarded a World Series ring for the Cardinals’ 2011 championship despite not appearing in the post-season.
